Salsa Music – Cuba’s Musical Legacy

Salsa music is sometimes referred to as Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban or Afro-Carribean music. Played in dance clubs or performed in concerts, this is the sound of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Venezuela and New York. This is Cuba’s musical legacy that rose from its street culture, which shaped the country’s popular music throughout the past several decades.

Literally meaning “sauce” in the Spanish language, salsa is the type of music requiring the perfect amount of essential ingredients. To its enthusiasts, the spicier, the better.

The music starts with a clave rhythm, which commonly is eight beats long and has a 2-3 or 3-2 pattern. This serves as the heartbeat of this genre. The clave should be learned, applied and felt in order to play or dance this colorful and spicy music. Other ingredients in the salsa music recipe are montuno, tumbao and guaganco, among others. These are ostinattos, or patterns, played by the piano, bass, strings and horns all throughout or in certain parts of the song.

This Cuban original music has landed in different parts of the world years ago. Later on, its powerful tunes influenced its various destinations and vice-versa. Alternative Music – History And Facts Revealed

Off-Country
Country music that does not conform to the prevailing country style is generally classified as alternative music. Musicians playing alternative country music are generally those who do not subscribe to high production values and popularity concerns. Their music are of lo-fi sound quality and often incorporated strong punk and rock and roll qualities and contained lyrics that are bleak, gothic or socially aware. The range of their music spans American folk tune to rockabilly and honky-tonk to a fusion of rock and country music. Not-so-hip Hip-Hop
The alternative version of hip hop has not been very popular. Electric Rock
Alternative music is most often used to refer to alternative rock. It used to be that the word alternative was used in the 1980s to refer to punk rock-inspired bands that do not belong to major record labels and have no clear genre association. There are a lot of influences in alternative rock namely, grunge, Britpop, gothic rock and indie pop. Most of these alternative rock artists were considered cult acts and recorded their albums on independent labels. Their popularity was largely due to the exposure their alternative music got in college radios and word-of-month. The band Nirvana entry in the alternative music scene has propelled the popularity of several other bands playing alternative rock music. Metallica is another group who made it big in the mainstream music world playing alternative rock.

Perhaps an offshoot of alternative rock is alternative dance music. This kind of music combined elements of dance-pop which includes forms of electronic house or techno, and alternative rock genres. Alternative dance music can be characterized as mostly electronic, pre-programmed beats and sequenced synthesizer melodies.

As there will always be popular music, there will always be a spot for alternative music. After all, there will always be music that falls somewhere in-between, music that is somewhat like but not entirely the same as what is predominantly popular at a certain period in time.

Acoustic music has always been popular and has been around for many years. The art of acoustic music has been performed throughout the centuries, and throughout the world. So what is it about acoustic music that makes it so enjoyable and admired?

Music that is made from using instruments without using any form of electronic means, can be considered as acoustic music. This type of music started to get a name for itself, after the arrival of electrical instruments such as the electric guitar. Of course the advent of these electrical instruments is relatively new compared to the amount of time that music has been played for, therefore, you can almost class all musical instruments and all music as acoustic. If electrical instruments very never invented, acoustic music would be all music and may not have had a specific term named after it.

However acoustic songs can be produced and edited through electrical means and if there is a gig or concert being played by an acoustic artist, very often, the sound is amplified using electronic amplifiers. But it has to be done caringly to maintain the natural sound accurately. Electronic amplifiers are only used to increase the volume of the sound from the acoustic instrument.

One of the most popular types of acoustic music is acoustic guitar songs. These types of songs seem very intimate and personal as mostly it is just one person and their guitar performing the song. This type of music is often played in music bars, with open microphone nights and they seem to be very popular. Acoustic guitars create music through the vibration of the strings but to increase the sound, an acoustic guitar uses a soundboard, resonant cavity and a sound box.

These types of productions try to promote acoustic music in an effort to get music back to basics and to increase the quality of music that people are subjected to.

Some see solo acoustic songs as a breath of fresh air due to the increasing production of often computerised, synthetic and cluttered music that tries to dominate the charts. Therefore some think of acoustic music as being more pure then other forms, as it is raw and natural.
